Logo vs Brand Identity: What's the Difference?

A logo is one symbol that represents your business. A brand identity is the whole visual system around it: colors, fonts, imagery, graphic elements and the rules for using them. The logo is your signature. The brand identity is your whole style.

You can have a logo without a brand identity — but it rarely makes a business look consistent or memorable on its own.

What is a logo?

A logo is the mark people use to recognize you. It can be a word (like Google), a symbol (like Apple), or a mix of both.

A good logo is simple, recognizable and works at any size — from a website header to a tiny app icon.

But a logo alone can't do much. It doesn't tell you which colors to use in an Instagram post, what your website should look like, or how your packaging should feel.

What is a brand identity?

A brand identity is everything that makes your brand look and feel like you. It usually includes:

  • logo — the main version and its variations
  • color palette — main and accent colors
  • typography — fonts for headings and text
  • imagery — the style of photos and illustrations
  • graphic elements — patterns, shapes, icons, textures
  • brand guideline — the rules that keep it all consistent

Together, these create a recognizable style. You can often tell which brand a post or a package belongs to before you even see the logo. That's a strong brand identity at work.

Which one do you need?

A logo is enough if:

  • you're testing an idea and don't know yet if it will work
  • your budget is very limited right now
  • you only need something for a profile picture or a simple landing page

You need a brand identity if:

  • you're launching a business you're serious about
  • your product is premium, but your brand looks cheaper than it is
  • your website, Instagram and packaging all look slightly different
  • you're working with several designers or a team
  • you want to raise your prices and look the part

A simple rule: if people will see your brand in more than two places, you need more than a logo.

Common mistakes

Ordering a logo and expecting a brand

Many business owners pay for a logo, then wonder why their brand still looks messy. The logo was never the problem — the missing system around it was.

Building everything around the logo

The logo is usually the smallest part of what people see. Colors, fonts and photos do most of the work. A great logo with random colors still looks random.

Skipping the guideline

Without clear rules, every new post or page slowly drifts away from the original style. A guideline keeps your brand consistent, even when someone else designs for it.

Starting with design, not with meaning

A brand identity should come from who you are: your story, your audience, how you want people to feel. When it starts with "make it look modern", it usually ends up looking like everyone else.

How we create brand identities at lunö

We start with questions, not sketches. Who are you, who is it for, and what should people feel when they see you?

Then we research your market, build a moodboard and create a visual concept you approve before we design everything else. Every brand identity includes a logo, color palette, typography and a brand guideline. Extra materials — business cards, social media templates, packaging — can be added to the package.

Brand identity projects start at $600 and take from 2 weeks.
